Our wooden surface mounted pattress boxes let you fit light switches and sockets onto solid stone or brick walls without chasing cables into the plaster. That makes them the natural choice for period properties, listed buildings and anywhere surface wiring is the practical option. Each pattress is handmade to order in our West Sussex workshop and finished to match our Classic Wood switch and socket plates. The result is a single, considered fitting rather than a plastic box behind a wooden plate.
What Is a Surface Mounted Pattress Box?
A pattress is the box a switch or socket is mounted on. A flush pattress sits inside the wall, while a surface pattress sits on the wall's face. You'll need a surface box where the wall is too hard, too old or too valuable to cut into, or where cabling is run on the surface. In a wooden finish, the box becomes part of the room's joinery instead of something to hide.
Choosing a Depth
Our 28mm surface pattresses suit standard switches and sockets, and give the slimmest profile on the wall. Choose a 38mm pattress when you need more room behind the plate, for example for dimmer switches, bulkier wiring or accessories with a deeper back. For specialist installations, our 50mm deep pattress gives the most space, for larger modern dimming modules, smart switches or wiring that won't sit comfortably in a shallower box. Choose a single pattress for one-gang switches and sockets, or a double pattress for two-gang fittings. Both come in Oak, Medium Oak, Dark Oak, Limed Oak and Ash, so you can match your pattress to your plate, flooring, beams or skirting.
